JANUARY 28TH-30TH RECAP

By Michael Battista/@MichaelB_96

The bomb cyclone that dropped snow across the tri-state area last weekend greatly affected the Colonial schedule. Of the 14 games scheduled only five were played. Teams will work with one another to reschedule the six missed conference games ahead of the end of the regular season in two weeks.

Every game affected by last weekend’s weather is listed under the scoresheet section of this recap, including any announced makeup information. To anyone wondering why Rutgers University is now considered “Non-League”, please refer to last week’s recap.

Despite the limited slate, the two teams leading their respective divisions made strides. One clinched a playoff berth without even playing while the other was perfect with two high offense displays against top competition.

The University of Pennsylvania inched one step closer to securing a First Round Playoff bye with a 6-1 win over Bryn Athyn University on Friday night. Two goals from Will Torgerson and a great performance from goalie Xander Kostelnik (28/29 shots saved) has the Quakers at 26 points. If the team takes any points from it’s February 12th regular season final against Stockton University (Win or OT loss) it will clinch the Liberty Division’s top spot and automatic berth into the Colonial Cup Semifinals.

The team followed this performance up with a non-conference win, 8-1, against Georgetown University of the Atlantic Coast Collegiate Hockey League (ACCHL) the next day. Three players scored twice against the ACCHL’s Capital Division leaders despite the Hoyas taking the lead early. Of note, Connor Blend led his team with four points, all from assists, during the contest in Maryland.

The other important result came as Princeton University downed the New Jersey Institute of Technology, 4-3, in overtime on Sunday. The result assured Seton Hall University, who hold the tiebreaker over NJIT, the top spot in the Independence Division and a spot in the Colonial Cup playoffs. The Highlanders goals early in each period of regulation did little against a Tigers squad eager to be back on the ice for the first time since mid-November.

As of now, the Colonial Cup Playoff field is set. UPenn, Millersville University, The College of New Jersey, Bryn Athyn, Stockton, University of Scranton, and Seton Hall will all compete at Cure Insurance Arena on the weekend of February 18-20. The only team that knows it’s placement as of now is Seton Hall, who will be the seventh seed. The final two weeks of the regular season will determine where the other teams finish and who they will face in the playoffs. For the full Colonial standings and playoff format, click here
