NOVEMBER 5TH-7TH RECAP

By Michael Battista/@MichaelB_96

The Colonial saw a huge match last weekend between the team’s leading their respective divisions. Liberty leading University of Pennsylvania and Seton Hall University, who currently have a 10+ point buffer in the Independence Division, squared off on Saturday afternoon. Outside of that Millersville University dominated Saint Joseph’s University (ACCHL) in a historic result for the PA school. In the end though it was conference games that made up a majority of the eight games played.

Additionally, all three of Monmouth University’s games were postponed out of an abundance of caution. All three were in-conference and will be made-up.

Overtime Thriller in Battle of Undefeateds

The top two teams in the Independence and Liberty Divisions clashed on Saturday afternoon when the University of Pennsylvania visited Seton Hall University. After being down by two goals twice in the third period the Quakers rallied and won over the Pirates in overtime, 5-4.

UPenn head coach Scott Carmack was not shy about praising the effort of the visiting school.

“Seton Hall will surprise a lot of teams this year and have been well coached, play tight defense and were led by the goalie (McCarthy) who played really well for them Saturday,” the coach said. “It was good to meet their new coaches and see the job they’ve done with the boys in the short amount of time with the team this year.”

Goaltender John McCarthy made 45 saves out of a possible 50 against one of the conference’s leading scoring teams.

A clean and quick first half saw UPenn take the lead off a Connor Blend goal, assisted by Tyler McGoldrick, but the visitors came into control not long after. In the second period Cameron Toussaint and Tyler Fearon both scored goals to bookend the twenty minutes, with Thomas Healy assisting on the latter goal. Despite Toussaint making it 3-1 early in the third period the Quakers fought back. Tyler McGoldrick scored the first of his hat-trick to cut the lead, assisted by Connor Blend, before the Pirates countered with a goal from Nick Serapiglia, assisted by Toussaint for his third point of the night.

After that, the night swung in favor of the home team. Blend scored his second goal on a power play, assisted by Hayden Stephan and Blake Vastola, to cut the lead back down to one. Five minutes later and with five minutes to go McGoldrick scored the critical game-tying goal, assisted by Stephan and Ethan Cohen, to make it 4-4. Only three minutes into overtime and playing three v three, McGoldrick, assisted by Alan Burd, slotted in the game winner to take home the two points.

UPenn returns home this Friday to play West Chester University in conference play with the latter looking for its first win of the season. Seton Hall will host Millersville University on Saturday in what could be a game of the weekend candidate.
