OCTOBER 15TH-17TH RECAP

By Michael Battista/@MichaelB_96

Last weekend was full of firsts in the Colonial. Bryn Athyn College played their first game as a member of the CSCHC since they joined the conference earlier this year. The game between The College of New Jersey and the University of Pennsylvania was the first time the two teams had met since the 2020 Colonial Cup Final and ended with the first conference shootout of the season. While three games were either postponed or cancelled, leaving Saturday barren of activity, it was still an eventful weekend and it’s all recapped below.

Bryn Athyn Falls In Season Opener

The newest member of the Colonial States College Hockey Conference hit the ice for the first time last Friday. Bryn Athyn College, formerly of NCAA Division 3, played its first ACHA match against Rowan University’s Division 3 team, falling 6-4 on the road.

Half the game was a back and forth with Rowan taking the lead twice before freshman forward Landen Sill clawed his team back. After going down 1-0 after 120 seconds, James Cole and Gabriel Beres found Still who slotted in the tying goal with 14:21 left to play in the period. Rowan responded less than a minute later with another goal and made it 3-1 not long after.

In response, the Lions second star of the game senior forward Zach Pamaylaon found Sill again to make it 3-2 with five and a half remaining in the period. Sill completed the hat-trick in his first collegiate game five minutes into the second off another Pamaylaon assist to tie the game again. Despite the effort Rowan took control of the game and the Lions’ defense struggled to contain them. Three more goals in thirty minutes was too much for the visitors to overcome. Pamaylaon earned his third of the night when he scored a power play goal late in the third period off an assist from goalie Michael Nabozny.

Bryn Athyn will have this upcoming weekend off before they officially enter conference play. The team will visit fellow first year team Stockton University on October 29 at Atlantic City Skate Zone.

UPenn’s Shootout Win Prolongs TCNJ Slow Start

In a rematch of the 2019–20 Colonial Cup Final the University of Pennsylvania got revenge against The College of New Jersey, downing the defending champions, 2-1, in a shootout on Friday. The Lions have lost two straight CSCHC match-ups and are 1-3-1 in their last five games.

Heading into the game UPenn only had nine skaters and a goalie available. Head coach Scott Carmack explained his team altered strategy and modified their forecheck system to conserve energy and play smarter. The first period went scoreless, with TCNJ outshooting the Quakers 20 to 5, with goalie Xander Kostelnik playing fantastic between the sticks.

The second period picked up and the two team’s physically started to show. The Lions again outshot UPenn but only with a 9 to 7 total. However one of those nine mattered and Will Herrington found Sean Leonard during a power play to give the home team a lead, 1-0. The Quakers had chances, especially on their own power plays, but couldn’t convert on multiple breakaways for most of the game. Their big break came in the third period when Connor Blend scored off a direct shot on net in a face off to tie the game at one goal each.

The two teams couldn’t be separate in regulation or after an overtime period. Kostelnik did his job and stopped TCNJ during the shootout and allowed Hayden Stephan to score the game winner for his team in a later round. UPenn will try to make it two in a row when they visit West Chester University this Saturday. TCNJ will host the University of Scranton at Loucks Ice Center on Sunday afternoon.
