OCTOBER 1ST-3RD RECAP

By Michael Battista/@MichaelB_96

A busy weekend kicked off October for the Colonial States College Hockey Conference. Five games affected the Colonial standings while plenty of action happened against non-league schools. The Monmouth Hawks were the lone team to win a game outside of conference play while two more remain undefeated in the young season.

Recap and scores below:

Seton Hall Defeat West Chester, Remain Undefeated in Conference Play

(Additional game coverage by WSOU – 89.5 FM)

Seton Hall University is leading the Independence Division after three full weeks. The Pirates added their first non-division Colonial win to the standings on Saturday when they defeated West Chester University, 5-0.

The team got the home fans on their feet early in the first home game this season. Goals from Tyler Fearon and Thomas Healy in the first period set the tone as the Golden Rams were peppered with shots. Seton Hall players like Jimmy Griffin, Alex Romano, Nicholas Mangano were all able to find space and set up their teammates for goals. Griffin played the pivotal role early on assisting on both scores heading into the intermission.

Goalkeeper John McCarthy truly earned the clean sheet in the second period as his team’s offense cooled down. A third goal on a power play was called back after a Seton Hall penalty, keeping West Chester in the game for the time being. But after regrouping in the third the Pirates put it away thanks to goals from John Anselmo, Nicholas Serapiglia, and Cam Adamec ( Adamec also assisted on the fourth goal).

Seton Hall will try to make it four-straight wins this weekend when they visit Stockton University in the latter’s Colonial debut. West Chester will host Millersville University on Friday.

Rutgers Open Conference Play With Huge Win

Rutgers University has been quietly preparing itself for the 2021-22 season. Last month the team pulled off an impressive upset by defeating Montclair State University on home ice, 7-4, and in only it’s second game the Scarlet Knights up-ended a Colonial power. Friday night saw the group beat the University of Scranton, 4-0, at Bridgewater Sports Arena.

The Knights got on the scoresheet early with two goals in the first period. The Royals struggled and shot nearly half as many times as the home team (28-15). By the end of regulation Rutgers was able to add two more goals and shot a total of 62 times on net.

It was only the start of a rough weekend for the Royals who also fell at home to Saint Joseph’s University, 5-0, on Sunday. Head coach Stefan Fusco knows his team has to play better and young faces need to be more in-sync if they want to succeed going forward.

Rutgers has a chance to show their win over a two-time conference finalist wasn’t a fluke. They’ll visit Monmouth University on Friday at Jersey Shore Ice Arena. The Royals were set to play against Drexel University’s D2 team on Saturday but that game has been cancelled.
