SEPTEMBER 17TH-19TH RECAP

After many months the Colonial States College Hockey Conference and it’s teams are back on the ice. All but two schools played their first games of the year since the month began. Including two games last week Colonial teams went 4-4-1 (W-L-OL) against non-conference opponents to open the season. Among the bunch, two teams also met for the first conference clash of the year with it also being in the brand new Independence Division.

Here’s a recap of that and every other CSCHC score:

Sunday, Sept. 19

Princeton Tigers vs Monmouth Hawks (1-6)

The Independence Division’s inaugural contest pitted former conference champion Princeton University against the visiting Monmouth University. A back-and-forth first period gave way to a dominant display for the Hawks who picked their second win of the weekend, 6-1.

Despite being the home team the Tigers’ ice felt eerily unfamiliar as fans are still not allowed at Hobey Baker Memorial Ice Rink. Team captain Max Garlock did get the imaginary crowd rocking with a stellar wrap-around goal in the first twenty minutes. But that was the lone highlight as his young group soon began to struggle.

The Hawks were fresh off a last minute scrimmage/non-conference game the day before against Seton Hall University. It showed and many players put up great numbers. Nicholas Smythe earned a hat-trick while Todd Zellars assisted on two of his team’s goals. Richie Sabbagh, Greg Wanamaker, and Grant Loges also found the back of the net with assists from Aidan Kroncke and Michael Russ.

The backlines did their job and goalie Carson Rooney earned his second win of the weekend.

Princeton head coach Colin McCollough said after the game that his team still needs time to grow and get antiquated.

“We’re a young team, and are looking forward to finding the chemistry required to put some more points on the board,” he explained.

The Tigers will be back in action on Friday in another conference game against The College of New Jersey. Monmouth will host Seton Hall in a rematch on Friday with this result counting for conference standings.
